I’m a hands-on type of dad. I carry my son till my spine is crooked, wipe away every little crumb of poo between his cheeks, and even offer my cupped hand when he yaks up sour milk. I try to be the best dad I can be so that he can grow up (hopefully) to be a great… man/brother/husband/dad/human being. I consider myself lucky with two parents who loved and cared for me so that I would have the great opportunities that I’ve had in life. I’ve had no regrets about anything, but something my dad told me a few months back bugged me a bit. I’ve tried shaking it off, but it’s like an annoying lump in the back of my throat. Looking for advice, I asked him how he was as a dad, and he told me he really wasn’t hands-on. Maybe changed a diaper once. I don’t know how I feel about this. My dad was always there for me when I needed a few bucks or when I needed a ride to the library. So he’s a good dad, right? Maybe I’m thinking too much into it since I’m so much more hands-on with my own son. Well, can’t ponder on the past too much. Gotta get back to wiping my son’s ass.

He weighs just shy of 22 pounds and he’s got a gut that rivals the best eating champs this side of the Mississippi. His diet consists of many servings of fruit and veggie purees (the awesome Beaba machine), Gerber snacks, and of course, ounces and ounces of the ever-fattening boob milk. It seems the diaper changes never stop and with every unflapping of the cushy material, a nugget or two (huge nuggets) will always reveal itself (sometimes rolling away to our horror).
I’m all for a healthy baby who eats and poos all day and night, but seriously, are we looking at the future eating champ here?

A friend of ours has twins who just turned one and obviously didn’t have a budget for this party. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hatin’… just wonderin’. Anyways, we arrive at the golf course clubhouse to a setting that rivals the actual sesame street fun-house (if there is such a thing).Photo booth in the corner, Elmo and Cookie Monster prancing around making balloons, a candy corner that puts Nestle’s to shame, a buffet with a prime rib carving station, customized sesame street backpacks with each child’s name stitched on it, three cakes (one to eat, two for show), and… wait for it… wait for it… an open bar! For some reason, all the dad’s were hovered around this corner. I had to imbibe in a beer (or two), but I felt a bit guilty holding a bud light in one hand and carrying my son on the other. That and the fact that it was 11am.

I guess if you have the dough to spend, you’re going to give your kids all you can to “out-Jones” your peers. Your kids won’t remember it, but hey, at least mom and dad had a good time.

We’re one of the millions of households who uses Pampers for our little man’s nether regions. When he was born we tried out samples of a few brands including Huggies and Nature Babycare, but ultimately, Pampers won out. Even with the new DryMax technology that seems to have everyone in a tizzy, we’ve been quite satisfied. The past few days, however, have given us a new challenge…
Getting jolted out of bed to the sounds of the little man whaling at the top of his lungs and staggering to his room at 4am is unnerving enough, but to get there and find his pants drenched in pee is something else. It seems either the diaper isn’t living up to it’s name or the ten gallons of milk he drinks right before he goes to bed is posing a slight problem. We’ve tried stepping up to a bigger size, but now it just looks like he’s got a pair of Depends on. This sucks.

I have to admit, my brain’s been running on hyper-drive ever since I got the urge to start this blog. So much to think about, plan, install, uninstall, bang head on keyboard, repeat. This monster world of blogging is a bit intimidating for a guy like me just starting out, but there seems to be a lot of support and friendly bloggers out there who started pretty much the same way as I.

I had to think long and hard about starting up a brand new blog, especially since it’s almost impossible to get the word out amongst the millions of other excellent blogs. Thinking about my son and how I’m a rookie dad just learning the ropes each and every day helps me to continue and keep at it. Even if this blog never gets going to where I’d like it to be, at least I can say I kept a journal of some of my best thoughts and memories. This one’s for you Hiro. You’re my heerow.

There comes a time in every dad’s life where he has to stop thinking about himself and start channeling everything, and I mean everything, into his family. That time seems to have finally come for this dad. Gone are the days where the wife and I can head out to a fancy restaurant on a moment’s notice. Or the great times we had sampling Chardonnay’s and Riesling’s along with some fancy cheese’s we couldn’t even pronounce. All gone.
All of these luxuries (they seem like luxuries now) I can live without, but there is one such luxury in particular that I can’t seem to let go of no matter how hard I try. It is described by millions as a place of excess. A one word oasis that needs no explanation. VEGAS. Gone are the days where the guys and I would pack up the SUV and head northeast on the 15. The destination was sweet, but the journey there was no less exciting as we laughed and reminisced about the past trips we’d taken and how this current trip would be bigger and better than the previous. The gambling, the drinking, the starting the night at 1am extravaganza was the norm as we’d set our limits high and wouldn’t stop until our bodies were pushed to their peaks. Now, with son in tow and a body just over thirty, the creak of the bones and the stamina of a used up racehorse, these distant yet fond memories seem pretty much an oasis of their own. The reason I bring up Vegas now is that a handful of our friends, still single, have their annual Vegas birthday bash coming up. The trip consists of a night out at the most popular nightclubs (last year we reveled at the Encore pool nightclub in a private cabana), shopping, and enough food and libations to feed a herd of cows. Now that being said, I’m having a hard time selecting the “no” toggle on the Evite that I received a few days back. The wife could care less since she’s never been a big fan of Vegas anyways, but me on the other hand, it really hurts. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a hardcore gambler, nor am I a drunk. I, like many other average Joe’s, enjoy a few days in the desert to live it up a bit. Often times, when I’m having a bad day or I need to make the decision of buying that large cup of coffee or saving the money for the college fund, I simply look at a picture of the little guy and everything becomes clear again. I guess I just need to look at his picture reaaaally hard for this one.
